The flu shot is the best way to prevent contracting influenza, but many workers neglect to get vaccinated at the beginning of flu season. Every year, employers lose thousands of hours of productivity because of the flu, with some employees either taking a sick day or coming into work and not being able to complete their duties or responsibilities. According to corporate wellness solution provider Total Wellness Health, employees who receive the flu shot have between 13 and 44% fewer healthcare visits, 18 to 45% fewer lost work days and 18 to 28% fewer low efficiency work days.
One way to encourage employees to receive the flu shot is to hold an on-site vaccination clinic through the company’s wellness program.
According to the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), on-site flu vaccination clinics may help employers reduce absenteeism and the spread of the flu throughout the workplace. Employers may want to partner with a local medical center or healthcare organization to set up the initiative.
SHRM suggested employers follow advice from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which recommends scheduling the clinic during work hours and informing employees beforehand about the clinic. In addition, employers may want to offer workers healthy refreshments to encourage high participation.
