Safe Driver Week, designated between Oct. 15-21, calls attention to the rules of the road. Law enforcement officers nationwide are expected to keep a particularly sharp eye on the roads.
The annual week was started by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, which comprises Canada, Mexico and the United States, in 2007 as a way to call attention to road safety and help reduce the number of crashes, deaths and injuries as a result of unsafe driving behaviors.
Officers will be looking for drivers who are engaging in dangerous behaviors such as speeding, texting, following too closely and not wearing seat belts.
During last year’s Operations Safe Driver Week, 20,648 drivers received citations or warnings. Of those, 56.7% were cited or warned about state/local moving violations while speeding (39.4%).
Safe Driver Week is sponsored in partnership with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and is supported by industry and transportation safety organizations.
